Lando Norris second at 48 thousandths from pole position, Daniel Ricciardo thirteenth, unable to get out of Q2. There is an abyss between the two McLarens and if the Woking car were to be judged by the Australian’s performance, we would have to put our hands in the hair, other than third place in the Constructors’ championship.
Daniel is going through a deep crisis: so far the team has always tried to put him at ease by avoiding putting unnecessary pressure on him in the knowledge that sooner or later a rider of his caliber will have to go back to where everyone expects. But the wait gets longer and the solution of the mysterious problems does not seem to be in sight.
Ricciardo insists he is making progress to get back on top with McLaren, despite the inevitable frustrations after the disappointing qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.
“I feel we have made progress compared to last week in some areas and, if I didn’t look at the standings, I’d say this is a better weekend. But unfortunately it’s not translating into the time trial.”
The Australian is working hard in trying to adapt his driving style to the MCL35 M, but, as team principal Andreas Seidl admits, the car from Woking requires a different approach to get the most out of it.
“I will continue to work on it, because I feel much more comfortable in the car now. After this trio of races I had the opportunity to be in the car a lot which allowed me to find a good confidence. Of course there are still a couple of small mistakes here and there, but if I didn’t look at the ranking, then, in my head, I would think I did a good job ”.
This is the most evident fact of Daniel’s difficult moment: he doesn’t realize the lack of performance in qualifying, because then in the race he usually manages to do better …
“It is clear that there is still something missing and I think we will have to dig some more to understand what to do. Since what is missing is not a tenth, but we are talking about big differences, we have to deepen the analysis to understand what happens “.
