The plane of the Ural Airlines with Russian tourists on board could not take off from the Egyptian Sharm El Sheikh due to the appeal to the Egyptian aviation authorities by a foreign lessor. On Sunday, March 6, reports “RIA Newswith reference to informed sources.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, the board of Ural Airlines U6 1886 was supposed to fly on Saturday to Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. His route ran over the territory of Cyprus.
“The lessor has applied to the Egyptian aviation authorities to stop this plane, and Eurocontrol (European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation – Ed.) is not issuing permission to overfly its zone for them to return,” the source said.
It is noted that on Saturday two other flights of Ural Airlines returned safely from the resorts of Egypt.
The source stressed that other routes are currently being coordinated, but this will take time.
In addition, the agency reported that tourists who could not fly to Russia have now returned to their hotels.
A day earlier, Ural Airlines announced that it was canceling all flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Armenia, Azerbaijan and Israel until March 26 due to the current geopolitical situation.
The Federal Air Transport Agency has recommended that airlines stop all international flights from March 6. According to the agency, the restrictions do not affect carriers that operate aircraft of foreign or Russian registration and there are no risks of their arrest or detention. The restrictions do not apply to foreign airlines of states that have not joined the sanctions against Russia and have not restricted air traffic with it.
So, the Royal Flight airline stopped flights from Russia due to EU sanctions. In addition, carriers Nordwind, Pegas Fly and AZUR air said they would temporarily suspend all overseas flights.
Earlier, on February 28, in response to the decision of the European Union to close the skies for Russian airlines, the Federal Air Transport Agency restricted flights over Russian territory to carriers from 36 countries. Flights from these states can be operated with a special permit issued by the Federal Air Transport Agency or the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The decision of the EU countries to close the skies for Russia followed after Moscow launched an operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which was announced on February 24 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Against this background, Western countries, including the UK, the EU, the US and Japan, have imposed anti-Russian sanctions.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. On February 21, Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
