He is an otolaryngologist. He lives alone. The place manned since the morning by the police
«Matteo, open to me. I’m worried”. It is eight o’clock in the evening and Papa Giorgio is exhausted. On the phone he continues to invoke the name of his son Matteo Banderali, 42, a life between Italy and Romania where he was specializing in dentistry, complicated by the separation from his wife and lately, it would seem, also by the abuse of psychotropic drugs. From noon he is barricaded in his apartment, on the first floor of the Mazzino farmhouse in Mazzo, a tiny hamlet of Rho on the outskirts of Milan. He has an assault rifle and two pistols with him, which he has already used earlier in the day. At home with one of the guns he fired several shots, the carabinieri counted five. But he didn’t harm anyone, not even – as feared – himself.
«Matteo, open to me». Papa Giorgio, he doesn’t give up. The negotiator of the Carabinieri Special Intervention Group who came here from Livorno also tries again. It is yet another attempt, the negotiator is behind the door. He speaks to him closely, ever closer. He tries to leverage on his affections, on his little girl. And in the end he gives in. When he opens the door, the carabinieri are ready to hunt him down. Matteo Banderali gives up, shortly after eight in the evening. Outside, curious, family members, neighbors have been holding their breath all day. “I heard a gunshot at half past two and I rushed into the street,” says a neighbor,
The first signs of subsidence had already arrived shortly after seven. After a day spent in vain at the megaphone, Banderali had phoned dad Giorgio who, with his eyes now lost in the void, was waiting for the worst leaning on the white railing of the tennis court right in front of the former farmhouse.
It was he, a doctor and cardiologist who had retired for just over a year, who had sounded the alarm just before noon. He had asked for an ambulance for a suspected abuse of psychotropic drugs. And with the rescuers, the firefighters, the carabinieri of the investigative unit of Milan, under the command of Antonio Coppola and Michele Miulli, and then the colleagues of the first intervention rates and of the operational support teams had arrived.
The 42-year-old remained barricaded at home. For hours there was no sign, so much so that the intervention of the GIS was necessary. Until, in the evening, he was convinced and opened the door. At home there were weapons, ammunition and many psychiatric drugs that were seized by the carabinieri. The 42-year-old was accompanied by ambulance to the emergency room. Not even the father, completely upset, at the moment was able to explain the reasons for the gesture.
