Mexico City.- Getting Madonna’s 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” to play in the film Deadpool & Wolverine required a personal visit to the “Queen of Pop” by director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Reynolds.
In an interview with Sirius XM, the director recalled that they showed the singer the specific sequence of the superhero movie in which they wanted to use the theme.
“Let’s start with the fact that Madonna doesn’t license her songs, particularly that song. It was a pain to get it and it was a pain to use it,” Reynolds added.
According to the creative partners, Madonna offered no resistance, acquiesced, and even gave them feedback on how to improve the sequence that would lead to “Like a Prayer.”
“He gave us great feedback. He watched the scene and, I kid you not, he said, ‘You should do this,'” Reynolds recalled. “And damn, he was right.”
In addition to “Like a Prayer,” the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack features songs such as “Slash” by Korean boy band Stray Kids, as well as “Bye Bye Bye” by NSync, “Iris” by Go Go Dolls and “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News.
“The plan with Deadpool is always to have a soundtrack that doesn’t make sense on paper, because it’s so diverse and crazy, but it feels right for the movie. The soundtrack for this movie is no different,” Reynolds said during the global press conference.
With Stray Kids, there was even the idea of having the singers appear in the film, although this was dismissed due to logistical complications.
The feature film will be released in Mexican cinemas this Wednesday.
