The car a LPG And methanein addition to the classic revisionmust comply with precise rules that certify the integrity of tanks gas (cylinders). The recent decree 13/5/2022 of the MIMS defines the new ways of upgrading cylindersaccording to UNECE regulation R110.
Expiry of LPG cylinders and overhaul of tanks
The LPG cylindersaccording to the law, they must be replaced after 10 years from the date of production, both in the case of the original set-up or a system mounted at a later time.
L’LPG system instead it is advisable to have it checked periodically by a specialized workshop or during the inspections prescribed by the parent company. THE controls they concern the operation of the injectors, the electrical system, the pipes and fittings and foresee the eventual replacement of the LPG filter and the replacement of the reducer. These two interventions should be performed around the 100,000 km.
This operation must be done in a specialized workshop at a variable cost depending on the region of belonging, which it goes from 300 to 500 euros.
Revision of methane cylinders
Things change slightly with the cylinders of a gas system mounted on a methane car. As for the classic overhaul, the rules for the engines do not change petrol and diesel. Instead, what about the methane tanks we are faced with two possible paths. The first concerns those approved according to national legislation (DGM)that they must be replaced every 5 years from the first registration o system installation e scrapped after 40 years.
The second way leads us to the cylinders approved according to the European standard (R110 ECE / UN)which must be checked every 4 years from the first registration or installation of the system, up to twentieth year of age. This classification includes all those built in steel (CNG1)with resin reinforcement belt (CNG2) And steel and full synthetic coating (CNG3). The law does not allow the reuse of CNG2, CNG3 and CNG4 cylinders coming from radiated vehicles from circulation.
The cylinders that do not pass the periodic requalification checks are sent to destruction. Vehicle manufacturers have an obligation if they install CNG tanks 4 whose identification plate is not visible, to apply a copy of the plate on the surface of said tanks in a visible position, together with a declaration certifying the combination of the serial number of the cylinder with the vehicle chassis number; so much in order to avoid disassembly that would be operated for the sole purpose of having visual access to the identification plate.
CNG cylinder overhaul after an accident
If the vehicle on which the methane tank is installed is involved in a accident «Serious», the workshop that intervenes in the repair of the damage is obliged to submit to integrity verification the tank itself. If it passes the test, one will be released by the workshop declaration of integrity of the methane system. If, on the other hand, the verification had negative outcomethe vehicle must undergo the procedures of overhaul and replacement of CNG cylinders.
Methane tank in composite material
The methane tanks built by in composite material (CNG2) they need to be revised for the first time after four years and every two years thereafter.
There replacement of cylinders it has to be done before the vehicle inspection which is noted on the vehicle registration certificate
Circulating with the LPG and CNG tank expired what is the risk
Circulating with expired tanks risks not only a fine: fine in case of driving with expired tanks of the LPG and methane can get to 594 euros and you can add the administrative detention of the vehicle with withdrawal of the registration certificate: the vehicle registration document can be recovered only after testing with the new cylinders.
