SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The review of the financial terms related to the Itaipu hydroelectric plant by Brazil and Paraguay will be carried out in 2023 in a “positive context”, Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque said on Tuesday.
According to him, this is due to the efforts made to settle the project’s construction debts within the originally planned period. The cost of this loan, which will be fully amortized in 2023, has already represented more than half the price of energy from Itaipu, he added.
Albuquerque also said that the ministry has been technically preparing for the negotiations since the beginning of the Bolsonaro administration, and has had the collaboration of agents in the electricity sector, consumers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We have been counting on Itaipu’s technical knowledge, always willing to contribute to the achievement of a mutually favorable solution for the two countries.”
In 2023, Brazil and Paraguay will discuss the revision of Annex C, part of the agreement that deals with the financial terms of the venture.
