Just over a year ago it was announced that Deep silver would bring us a new spatial title with the name of Chorus. His first trailer was somewhat cryptic, but it promised us a game where spaceships would take a leading role, with some galactic intrigue.
This December 3, Chorus was finally released for Pc, Xbox One, X / S Series, PS4 and PS5. Now that we could enjoy it, we find a title that seems to us that it goes beyond a simple game of ships, to give us a quite enjoyable experience. Here we share our impressions.
Chorus: an entertaining but somewhat cliché story
On Chorus we take the role of Nara, a very skilled pilot who is trying to escape her past, and her ship Forsaken. After years of tranquility going unnoticed, their sins overtake them so they have to return to the ring once more.
This adventure will lead them to join a kind of resistance against a Great prophet who has his own plans for the entire galaxy. In the path, Nara and Forsaken (Forsa pa ‘friends) will find old friends, old enemies and interesting mysteries.
Chorus It has quite an interesting story, although it seemed to me that several times it falls into cliché territory. A heroine who joins a group to oppose an evil space regime is something we’ve seen countless times in popular culture. Although it does not throw away the quality of the game at all, it did seem to me that it takes away a bit of the surprise factor of what will happen.
Nevertheless, Chorus it does a great job of exploring its protagonists. The main story is somewhat predictable, but knowing the past of the pilot and her ship is something that is very worthwhile. The missions focused on them seemed to me the best of the large number that I got to play.
A wide universe at your fingertips
Speaking of missions, Chorus gives you a huge amount of them and many things to do. It is an open world game after all, where you can choose whether you want to continue the main story or be distracted by its myriad of secondary objectives.
In addition, the de Chorus it is very extensive and quite conducive to exploration. Not only will you find people who need your help, you could also run into credits and even ‘memories’ that expand the mythology of this universe. Of course, the views you come across are sure to inspire your adventurous spirit.
Doing side missions will reward your time. Some of the stories in these come to have a huge impact and I even came across a few that put you in a detective role trying to figure out what happened in a certain place. Not to mention that it seemed to me that there was a great variety in terms of their objectives.
Normally the rest of the travelers you meet in Chorus They will show their appreciation with credits or ship parts. These rewards can be used to improve Forsaken and become a nightmare for those who come in front of you.
Chorus’ satisfying combat
While exploration is one of the key components of Chorus, this is complemented by combat. Here you will find the gameplay that you would expect from a ship game, you will have to maneuver Forsaken to be able to destroy your enemies. You will do the famous barrel rolls, you have the option of accelerating to put distance or brake to have a better shot.
Also, the past of Nara He endowed her with a series of abilities, which we could say are ‘supernatural’, which will help you in confrontations. As progress in the history of Chorus, you will unlock more of them and the truth is that they are quite useful. For example, one of them transports you to enemies in seconds and another leaves them without shields for a short time.
Along with the skills of the pilot, Forsaken He carries three main weapons: a turret, laser cannons and missile launchers. You can use any of them as you please, but take into account that each one attacks differently. It will be up to you to decide which is the one that suits you for each enemy you find in Chorus. The further you advance, you meet new adversaries with their respective strengths and weaknesses.
At the beginning you may feel like you are moving slowly or that you do not know how to fly well, however it seems to me that Chorus It does a great job of teaching you the mechanics. The more you play, the more movements you will discover, the more comfortable you will feel driving and you will end up feeling like a Tom cruise on Top gun.
As if that were not enough, there are a number of challenges, such as making a move a certain number of times or killing a certain number of enemies with a specific weapon. Completing these will be beneficial to you, as it will increase the damage you do or decrease the energy you spend using your abilities.
The universe is really beautiful
Regarding the graphic section, Chorus I found it to be one of the most beautiful games I have witnessed in 2021. I had the opportunity to play it in PS5 and the quality of their settings seemed surprising to me. At times I felt as if I was actually seeing outer space from my living room.
It also has very varied scenarios. These range from mining settlements near the rings of a planet, to ethereal places with menacing portals in the distance and ancient space temples. Each offers its own kind of visual spectacle.
The only aspect I think it falls a bit into is the character models. Nara is in the foreground in some scenes and I found her skin and hair to be a bit blurry. Maybe all the effort of Chorus They left in giving us their galactic landscapes.
Is Chorus worth it?
Chorus It is a game that has possibly passed under the radar of many people, but I highly recommend that you give it a try. It has very satisfying combat that will make you feel like an ace from the skies towards the end, an exploration component that rewards your curiosity, and some pretty eye-catching visuals.
In addition, its huge open world will keep you exploring these parts of the galaxy for hours and hours without making you feel like you are falling into monotony. Whether you like ship games or not, Chorus it has the ability to be quite captivating. Hopefully several of your ideas will be taken over by similar titles to come in the future.
