Yesterday, October 4, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp they remained offline for just over six hours. It is not common for these platforms to last so long down, so this began to raise suspicions about a possible massive hack, some cyberattack or something similar. The reality, sadly, is much simpler than all this.
Through the portal Facebook Engineering, The company of Mark Zuckerberg announced that all of this was triggered during a routine maintenance session on the “backbone” of its network. They basically ran a setup command that was, in theory, harmless. Well, it was not as “harmless” as they believed since this command caused a total cut in the backbone network connections, and in turn, this also caused the company’s data centers to go offline.
“Our systems are designed to audit commands like these to avoid errors like this, but an error in the audit tool did not properly stop the command.”
According to Facebook, they have a system that allows them to verify that this type of configuration does not cause errors, but obviously, it did not work as it should. Once the backbone of this infrastructure was disconnected, the rest of the systems began to collapse and as a result we had a disconnection of almost six hours from all these platforms.
Zuckerberg he also lost a ton of money as a result of these disconnections. Exactly how much? Enter the following link to find out.
