In a few hours, F1 teams and drivers will be back on track in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for the two free practice sessions of the second round of the 2022 championship. Red Bull is back from a double knockout in Bahrain in the final stages of the race. First Max Verstappen and then Sergio Perez were forced to retire with the technicians of the Milton Keynes team who they analyzed in depth the causes that led to the withdrawals of the Anglo-Austrian single-seaters.
The standard Magneti Marelli petrol pump used by all the teams worked correctly, and Red Bull did not miscalculate the quantity of fuel loaded. The official press release issued by the team led by Christian Horner reads as follows: “Both cars have suffered from lack of fuel pressure. The amount of fuel was correct in both cars, but a vacuum prevented the pumps from drawing fuel. We have taken the necessary measures to correct this problem and we do not expect any inconvenience this weekend ”.
As we have previously reported, therefore, the thesis that leads to the cavitation (formation of vapor zones within a fluid which then implode). Red Bull engineers and specialists from Honda and Exxon-Mobil may not have correctly calculated the evaporation rate of gasoline at high temperatures – the new 10% bioethanol blend with different chemical properties is a factor not to be forgotten – and the petrol pumps when the fuel level dropped at the end of the race, they no longer fished. To avoid such inconveniences, bench or track tests are carried out, most likely at Red Bull this aspect has been underestimated and only appeared during the Grand Prix in Bahrain.
