Retail sales in January 2022 grew 2.5%, discounting inflation, compared to the same month of 2021. In nominal terms, which mirror the sales revenue observed by the retailer, the Cielo Ampliated Retail Index (ICVA) recorded increase of 14.4%.
“As the basis for comparison is the beginning of 2021, when we were still facing a worse phase of the pandemic, the easing of isolation measures continues to favor the performance of some sectors compared to January 2021. Calendar effects also contributed to the high. In January 2022, due to the composition of the New Year’s holiday days, there was one more working day”, explains the company. Discounting this effect, nominal growth would have been 13.9% and, discounting inflationary effects, 2.1%.
“Retail commerce continues to recover. It is the third consecutive month of high sales. This is related to the gradual return to routine, which was greatly affected by the worsening of covid-19 at the end of 2020 and in the first months of last year, but also to the good behavior of some retail sectors. This month, for example, we can positively highlight the sector, the Drugstore and Pharmacy sector”, says Pedro Lippi, Head of Intelligence at Cielo, in a note.
sectors
Discounting inflation and with the calendar adjustment, the Non-Durable Goods macrosector accelerated in relation to December 2021, with emphasis on the Drugstore and Pharmacy segments.
The Durable and Semi-durable Goods macro-sectors registered a deceleration in the monthly passage. In Durable and Semi-durable Goods, one of the segments that most contributed to the slowdown was Furniture, Electrical and Dept. while, in Services, it was the Tourism and Transport segment.
Regions
According to the deflated and calendar-adjusted ICVA, all regions showed growth in relation to January last year. The North region recorded an increase of 9.7%, followed by the South region (+6.5%), Northeast (+1.7%), Midwest (+1.4%) and Southeast (+1.0% ).
According to the nominal ICVA with calendar adjustment compared to January 2021, sales in the North region grew 19.2%, followed by the South region (+17.3%), Northeast (+14.8%), Midwest (+13.1%) and Southeast (+12.3%).
The Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA) monitors the evolution of Brazilian retail on a monthly basis, according to sales made in 18 sectors mapped by Cielo, from small retailers to large retailers. They account for 1.3 million retailers accredited to the company. The weight of each sector in the overall result of the indicator is defined by its performance in the month.
