‘Investors are meddling in the design of our country’ and ‘Putin’s chess moves paralyze the solidarity of the Western European countries’: these are some reactions to news topics that interest readers. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Friday 28 January. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
Investors | Put an end to that outside interference
‘US investors are buying up our houses’ (AD 27-1). We already knew that investors are ruining the housing market. And that one country simply buys up another was also a well-known phenomenon. Investors with the big money are therefore meddling in the organization of our country. Shouldn’t we even put an end to that? The housing market is partly affected by them. A dichotomy in society is emerging because, on the one hand, homeowners are becoming increasingly wealthy, while tenants are finding it increasingly difficult. Old-fashioned romantic campsites are converted by investors into a monotonous collection of block boxes for the wealthy among us. But our national airline KLM was also sold to the French shareholders. The railway was also sold to commercial investors. In the past, you had to declare war on a country before you could occupy it and take its infrastructure.
Jan van Rooijen, Soesterberg.
Investors II | Only buy a house if you are going to live in it yourself
Why does it all have to be so difficult and complicated? The problem of the housing market can be solved in this way: you can only buy a house if you are going to live in it yourself. Finished. Can all be done on an A4 sheet, to the House of Representatives and the Senate and settled. The majority will vote in favour. Or is this thought too simple?
Ruud Bosschieter, Gouda.
Ukraine | Putin’s chess moves paralyze Europe
‘Action Man from Russia is ready for anything’ (AD 27-1). Germany’s energy transition from lignite to Russian gas is using Putin to checkmate Germany. Under this pressure, Germany will not dare to impose sanctions on Russia for the encirclement of Ukraine. This puts Germany and France against each other, since the French produce enough nuclear energy and they do want to put pressure on Russia. In this regard, Germany needs a lot of Groningen gas to continue their transition, if the Nord Stream 2 will not be used. Putin’s chess moves paralyze the solidarity of the Western European countries.
Hans van Hoogeveen, Alphen aan den Rijn.
Relaxation | We like to throw the ass against the crib
‘With a little more discipline, much more can be done here’ (Letters 27-1). I had the same idea as letter writer Paul Visser. I am very pleased that this letter has been posted. Caterpillars never enough. Let’s be happy with what is possible and when everyone really takes responsibility, so much more can be opened and wider. But yes, in the Netherlands people like to be thrown to the curb if they don’t agree. Just join the rest who would like to return to an open Netherlands in a pleasant way. And there are many.
E. Laurens, Barendrecht.
Parcel delivery | We once had a wonderful pick-up point
‘Erwin saw a DHL bus driving by, but received a message ‘not at home’: ‘They are in cahoots with shops” (AD 25-1). A number of readers note that it would be better for the environment to have everything delivered to one point. Leaving aside the fact that the environment would be better off with the rediscovery of the physical store, I suddenly realize that we have already had those points, but I have forgotten the name. Oh yes, we called them then: post offices.
Wim Everwijn, Capelle aan den IJssel.
Shona Shukrula | Deep bow for tough female referee
‘If I do it right, girls will see that it is possible’ (Sportwereld 27-1). A tough girl in football land on the front page of the sports section. Hats off. And beautiful too. I can still say that at my age (90) in these times, I hope? And when I read that she functions at a high level in three places and that not in a fast car, like many football players, but by train, then a deep bow. Weak gender? This term should be deleted. A person is of the female or male gender, no more, no less.
K. Terleth, Amstelveen.
Mouth cap | Has that really reduced infections?
The government has announced the relaxation. What remains are the mouth caps. Why? They are everywhere on the street, nice and hygienic. Most people wear them incorrectly and multiple times. Constantly breathing your own breath is bad for your health. And billions of them have ended up in the environment worldwide. Pieces of iron and plastic are bad for humans and animals. Have the infections decreased by wearing a mouth cap?
Gerda Kok, Egmond aan den Hoef.
