IGN released the first images for RESIDENT EVIL: Welcome to Raccoon City, a live action feature film that will debut in November.
Written and directed by Johannes Roberts, the film will be inspired by the first two chapters of the famous saga CAPCOM who has been able to redefine the horror genre in videogames. This new live action feature film it will have nothing to do with the previous film saga created by Paul WS Anderson, and in an interview with IGN Roberts said:
This film has nothing to do with the previous franchise. We have decided to return to the videogame universe and create a product that is a full-fledged horror movie and not an action sci-fi like in previous feature films. I was particularly influenced by the RESIDENT EVIL 2 remake, and I tried to capture the atmosphere of the game. It was so cinematic. Unlike the previous films, we also opted to shoot the feature film completely at night.
As previously anticipated, the main cast will consist of Kaya Scodelario in the role of Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen in those of Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell Sara Chris Redfield, Avan Jogia like Leon S. Kennedy, And Tom Hopper who will interpret instead Albert Wesker. Speaking of the cast choices, the director said:
The difference between this film and previous cinematic transpositions of the game is that this time around, every main character in the cast will have a fundamental role within the narrative. These are not mere actors who cosplay the protagonists of the games using wigs and the same clothes. During the choice of the actors a fundamental element was to find people capable of convey the essence and energy of the characters of the CAPCOM saga. Very often in the cinematographic transpositions of video games there is a tendency to look for actors who visually resemble the protagonists, but without creating a multifaceted role that is credible and with which the viewer is able to empathize.
Finally, during the interview, the director talked about the film’s settings, in particular the terrifying one Villa Spencer, revealing that inside we will find a character already seen in the remake of the first chapter of the saga. It is about Lisa Trevor, which within the film will be played by Marina Mazepa and of which we will be able to see the first image at the end of the article. Regarding this, Roberts stated:
I wanted to go back to the horror elements that made the saga famous. Creating terrifying atmospheres rather than giving space to action. We have cooperated with CAPCOM to faithfully recreate iconic locations from the franchise such as Villa Spencer and the Raccoon City Police Station. Lisa Trevor he will play a fundamental role in the film, he is a character that fascinated me a lot when I played the remake of the first chapter. Its appearance it is visually disturbing, but the character also owns extremely fascinating elements. Its story is one of the elements that I wanted to implement most in the film, as it was never told outside of the games. Also for her I wanted to create a multifaceted character who was not limited to being a simple monster, but who managed to be terrifying but at the same time tragic. In the movie his story will be connected to Claire’s somehow.
We leave you now with the first images of the film reminding you that RESIDENT EVIL: Welcome to Raccoon City will debut in US theaters on November 24, while in the UK it will arrive on December 3. At the moment we don’t know when the feature will be available in Italy, we just have to wait for more information.
