The survey “inequality kills”, published by the organization Oxfam Brasil, pointed out that 26 billionaires per hour have appeared in the world since the beginning of the pandemic. On the other hand, between March 2020 and November 2021, the income of 99% of people on the planet fell.
“The current economic structure of the world concentrates wealth, impoverishes and kills millions of people, destroys the planet and puts the future of human existence on the planet at risk. We want an economy centered on equality, where no one has to live in extreme poverty and just have to survive. Everyone has the right to have opportunities to prosper and have a more dignified life.”
+OECD: After recovery, growth in several major economies likely to slow
The ten richest men in the world doubled their income concentration from US$ 700 billion (R$ 3.87 trillion) to US$ 1.5 trillion (R$ 8.3 trillion) in this period while more than 160 million people entered the poverty line all over the world.
The income from Jeff Bezos’ fortune during that period alone would fund vaccines for everyone in the world to be vaccinated, the study found.
Other institutions such as the IMF, the World Bank, Credit Suisse and the World Economic Forum have also estimated that the pandemic has triggered an increase in economic inequality in the world.
Among other information, the Oxfam study points out that the 10 richest men in the world have six times the wealth of the poorest 3.1 billion. In Brazil, the 20 richest have the income of 60% of the population. Talking about the impact on the environment, the report points out that the richest 1% in the world emits more than twice as much CO2 as the poorest 50%.
The study was launched at the beginning of the year to be debated during the Davos Economic Forum, which would start this Monday (17). But it was postponed at the end of last year due to the advancement of the ômicron variant and should take place in June.
