This bill provides for the extension of the exceptional powers given to the State due to the health crisis, powers which allow it, for example, to limit gatherings and travel. And given the resumption of the coronavirus epidemic, the government wants to have these powers for longer, until April 1, 2021. And that makes the right wince. Because in theory, an election is scheduled before this deadline: the regional ones, in March 2021. And the right fears that these exceptional powers will allow Emmanuel Macron to postpone the ballot.
As for the municipal elections last spring? This precedent is indeed in everyone’s mind, and the suspicion is all the stronger as the president said he was in favor, just before the summer, to postponing the regional until after 2022. The indignation of elected officials was such that his Prime Minister Jean Castex immediately buried the hypothesis. “And since then, zero news, no confirmed date”, notes an executive from the Republicans. The issue stirred the group meeting Tuesday in the assembly. So much so that the president of LR deputies, Damien Abad, intends to ask for guarantees from Jean Castex, whom he meets on Tuesday in Matignon.
