The Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to launch an investigation into what it calls President Joe Biden’s politicization “of the federal government.” The investigation should focus on the Justice Department, the FBI and other federal agencies.
According to the Republicans, the relevant authorities have gone beyond their limits in the investigations into the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and the role of former President Donald Trump in it.
The investigation further focuses on allegations that the Biden administration pressured major tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Google to censor views that violate White House policies. The bill establishing the investigative team requires members of the public to investigate how the executive branch works with the private sector, nonprofits and other agencies.
The Republicans already announced before the November midterm elections that they would conduct such an investigation if they win the majority in the House, which they (narrowly) did. For example, in August, just days after an FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik promised to launch an investigation into “Joe Biden and his administration’s politicization of the Justice Department and FBI.” ”. She called the deliberate FBI raid, which was aimed at recovering classified documents, “abuse and exceeding powers”.
Democrats have particularly expressed concern over a provision in the passed bill that authorizes the Commission of Inquiry to investigate “ongoing criminal investigations.” After all, they fall outside the scrutiny of parliament. “This is a violation of the separation of powers,” said Democrat Jerrold Nadler, for example. “And therefore very dangerous.”
