North Carolina, United States.– North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who is running for governor on the Republican ticket, vowed Thursday to stay in the race after CNN reported that he had called himself a “black Nazi” and defended slavery on a porn site forum.
In an 82-second video released before the CNN article was published, Robinson attempted to undermine the report, which brought to light old comments the Republican allegedly made on “Nude Africa.”
Robinson, who has a long history of inflammatory comments and has been a fierce opponent of transgender rights, made comments about how he enjoyed watching transgender pornography, according to CNN. At the forum, Robinson described himself as a “pervert” who liked “transvestite porn on girls,” the report said.
In his video Thursday, Robinson said: “Let me assure you that the things you’re going to see in that story are not the words of Mark Robinson.”
CNN said it had decided not to publish only some of the graphic sexual comments by Robinson, who made those comments between 2008 and 2012, according to the report. He then accused his Democratic rival, Attorney General Josh Stein, of being behind the article without evidence and said he would not drop out of the race, which is one of the most competitive in the country for governor this year and is taking place in a key presidential battleground. “We are still in this race,” Robinson said. “We are here to win.” Stein’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Robinson invoked Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in his defense. “Clarence Thomas once said he was the victim of a high-tech lynching,” Robinson said. “Well, it seems Mark Robinson is, too.” CNN also reported that Robinson had written about supporting the return of slavery. “Slavery is not evil,” he wrote. “Some people need to be slaves. I wish they would bring it back. I would certainly buy some.” Since the start of his campaign, Robinson has come under fire for a series of incendiary statements and social media posts, including one that cited a statement attributed to Adolf Hitler. He has also called survivors of the Parkland school shooting who have been outspoken in their support for gun control measures “spoiled, angry, know-it-all children.” People close to former President Donald Trump had braced for a story about Robinson to break this week, according to a person with direct knowledge of the conversations, amid concerns among the state’s establishment Republicans that more damaging information would emerge. Trump had refused to let Robinson attend at least one recent event the former president held in the state. His campaign was also preparing to further distance itself from Robinson but had no plans to ask him to step down, the person with direct knowledge said. Some close to Trump’s team had hoped Robinson would decide to step down, so reporters would stop covering his controversies.
