Representatives of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will ask for an autopsy of the B-doping sample taken from her at the end of December. This was stated on Thursday, February 17, in the reasoning part of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
“There is a possibility that the anti-doping laboratory may have made a technical error that is compatible with the extremely low concentration of the substance in the sample. That is why the athlete will request the analysis of the B sample, ”says paragraph 119 of the reasoned decision.
Earlier in the day, the CAS confirmed that the banned drug trimetazidine may have entered the body of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva due to her grandfather’s medication.
At the same time, WADA considered Valieva’s evidence in the doping case insufficient.
At the Beijing Olympics, a scandal erupted around 15-year-old Valieva due to a dubious doping test. A World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory in Stockholm said that a test taken on December 25 contained traces of trimetazidine, which is prohibited by the rules. The figure skater was temporarily suspended from the competition, but the decision was successfully challenged.
On February 14, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeals of WADA and the IOC and allowed the Russian woman to compete in individual competitions at the Olympic Games. The Russian Olympic Committee, commenting on the situation, indicated that Valieva received negative doping test results before and after December 25, and the athlete’s sample after the team tournament in Beijing also turned out to be clean, like all other samples taken during the Olympics.
However, because of what happened, the skater came under close attention, especially foreign media, and faced psychological pressure.
Valieva, who was in the lead after the short program, took fourth place (224.09 points). During the performance, she made several mistakes and also fell twice.
Russian figure skater Anna Shcherbakova won the gold medal in women’s singles. According to the sum of the programs, she scored 255.95 points. Russian Alexandra Trusova won silver, she completed five quadruple jumps for the first time in the history of figure skating. The judges rated Trusova’s performance at 177.13 points, for both programs she received 251.73 points. The third was the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto (233.13).
The 2022 Olympics are held from February 4 to 20, the Paralympics – from March 4 to 13. The games will be held in three clusters at once – in Beijing (hockey, figure skating, speed skating, curling), Zhangjiakou (biathlon, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping) and Yanqing (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, skeleton and luge).
