Former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo returned to Ivory Coast on June 17 after a ten-year absence. France 24 offers an exclusive documentary that traces this historic day, aboard the return plane. Laurent Gbagbo recalls his political career and his acquittal before the ICC for crimes against humanity. When he arrived in Abidjan, his followers exploded with the joy of meeting “their president” again. A story by Charles Emptaz and Olivier Jobard.
Laurent Gbagbo returned on a flight from Brussels, where he had lived since his acquittal by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in January 2019, upheld on appeal on March 31. When he got off the plane in Abidjan, he was applauded by hundreds of people, those who had been able to access the airport, his relatives, officials from his party, the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), and airport and airline staff.
