The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) released this Tuesday (31) a report that denounces actions of persecution and repression against family members of political prisoners in Cuba.
According to the study, which was sent to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the communist dictatorship’s strategies include monitoring, intervening or suppressing the use of the internet by family members to silence or reduce their presence on social networks and in independent press bodies; intimidation so that they do not organize legal defense actions before national and international bodies; infiltration of agents so that they become trusted people of members of these families; and conditional offer of legal benefits or forced expatriation.
The report also points to actions such as arrests, interrogations, canceling licenses for private undertakings or works, violating physical and electronic correspondence and “coordinating social rejection in workplaces and communities”.
In a statement, the OCHR highlighted that these strategies generate “fear and abandonment of civic behavior, leaving emigration as the only fundamental form of escape from the pattern of harassment and repression designed”.
