Although today we consider Tesla to be the most dominant company in the field of electric mobility, in the past it was others that took the leap before anyone else when it came to developing battery-powered cars. Nissan and Renault, through their close union, will always be able to say that they were the first to have a mass electric car, the LEAF and the ZOE arrived long before the current Model 3 or Model Y, although the magnitude of their reach is very different. This historical knowledge now serves Renault to develop very attractive products that will improve for the future. At least that’s what its top manager has recognized, Luca de Meo.
It must be recognized that the arrival of de Meo to the management of Renault has been a real breath of fresh air for the company. The transformation has been enormous in every sense. The range has grown rapidly, perhaps somewhat excessively. The positioning of the brand has also changed until it has become one of the best in the general segment.. Above all, what has changed the most is the electrical approach. Renault has some of the most attractive electric cars of the moment right now, all of them led by the already famous Renault 5. A true hypnotist for everyone.
Renault prepares a new generation of electric cars for 2028
Almost in an underhanded way, Renault is in the middle of launching several electric products, including the 5, the Renault 4 and the future Renault Twingo, which will continue with the creative trend of recovering past designs and updating them. The French have focused on the lower categories knowing that price is the main factor limiting the expansion of electricity supply. Small, urban cars, with good performance and an attractive quality-price ratio. We not only see them in the diamond brand, but also in its Romanian sister, Dacia. The Spring is one of the best-selling electric cars in Spain and Europe. There is nothing cheaper.
Despite this focus on miniaturizing the fleet, Renault is also thinking about a larger and more advanced future. Current models use the AmPr Small platform. A structure designed for electric cars for segments A and B. The structure can vary its wheelbase to adapt to various configurations, but not enough to reach the higher categories. Luca de Meo has assured that Renault engineers are working on a completely new platform that, according to its CEO, will be a real revolution. Something that all manufacturers assure when talking about their projects.
“There will be two generations in one,” said the executive director. Among its many virtues, the new platform, which still has no name, will reduce production costs by 40%, which in turn will reduce vehicle prices. Its launch is scheduled for 2028, although at the moment it is unknown which will be the first family car to enjoy it. Its flexibility will allow it to adapt to several different categories. Just a few days ago, Renault gave us a preview with the presentation of the Renault Embleme. Although it is a hydrogen prototype, it lays the creative and technological foundations for future launches of the French brand.
