After the separation from Sega, Relic Entertainmentthe studio behind Company of Heroes and co-developer of Age of Empires 4, has announced new staff cutswhich apparently will impact at least 41 people within the company.
The confirmation came from a statement issued by the company on LinkedIn, in which it states that the “decision was not easy” and “was made exclusively with the aim of providing Relic with the better chances of survival in an increasingly volatile industry“.
In May last year the company had fired 121 employees, while from the words of producer Robyn Smale in a separate post, we learn that those just announced will involve 41 jobs.
The waves of layoffs in the gaming sector continue
At the end of March Relic Entertainment separated from Sega thanks to financing from an “external investor” that allowed the studio to become independent. At the moment we don't know what the studio's next big project will be, which in the meantime has confirmed that it will continue to actively support Company of Heroes 3.
Unfortunately this is yet another case of mass layoffs in the gaming industry of the last few months. As many as 18,000 workers were fired between 2023 and 2024 alone.
