There Scuderia Ferrari completed the first three days of pre-season testing which took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain. The F1-75 covered a total of 439 laps equal to 2052 km – more than any other single-seater – with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz taking turns behind the wheel on a daily basis. The final day of testing was opened by Charles, who continued to run, as in the past few days, with C2 and C3 tires, carrying out some tests aimed at assessing the car’s behavior with different set-up adjustments.
In the four hours of the morning – interrupted five times by the red flag due to as many stops on the track of cars – the Monegasque completed 44 laps equal to 206 kilometers. In total, Leclerc therefore completed a total of 203 laps (949 km). After the lunch break, Carlos continued the work of the team. The Spaniard started by testing the wet and intermediate tires on the artificially wet track. As soon as the track dried, Sainz was also able to run on dry tires, using the C2, C3 and C4 compounds. For him 92 laps equal to 430 kilometers which brought the total of the three days to 236 laps (1103 km). Now Ferrari returns to Maranello where the large amount of data collected will be carefully analyzed in view of the second and final pre-season test scheduled at the Sakhir circuit from 10 to 12 March. On that same track the following week we will begin to get serious with the first round of the 2022 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Laurent Mekies: “Overall it was a solid three days of testing, in which we managed to complete many laps. We have practically completed our program in full and we are satisfied with it. In Barcelona we focused on three key elements: first of all, testing the reliability of the F1-75, covering a large number of laps; then to map different parameters of the car, from aerodynamic performance to that with the various rubber compounds up to vehicle dynamics. We have a long list of elements to analyze and in these days we have checked a good number of them. Last, but not least, it was essential to put our drivers in a position to lap enough to allow them to familiarize themselves with a completely new car, which requires a different driving style and a different approach to the various racing conditions. We have succeeded in this objective with both Charles and Carlos by dividing the workload equally over the three days ”.
“This test was also very useful for the racing team that was able to get back in touch with the track – added Mekies – for the boys it was a necessary warm-up in view of a season that will be long and intense: they were able to train with pit stops and the various departments of the team have resumed interacting with each other and with the drivers. The list of items to try is still very long and we expect that the battle between on the track will be very close. In the meantime, we must thank all those who have worked in the last few months factory and they did their best to get us on the track well prepared. It is only the first stage of a long year in which we want to push hard and all united “.
