In the last few days it arrived in early access on Steam a very interesting title, a third-person game that despite borrowing some survival mechanicsdoes not fit definitively into the genre, becoming a very captivating hybrid. If we then consider that on a narrative level we are talking about a game that takes full inspiration from Slavic folk culturethe light bulb of curiosity makes its light shine even brighter. We’re talking about REKAan adventure proposed to us by FireshineGames and developed by Emberstorm Entertainment.
The forest, the girl, and the witch
When we launch REKA, we will be immersed in game world without too much preamble, but not before having customized the girl’s appearance that we will check, and above all have understood who he is. The mythology behind the game tells us about a historical period where there are witchesand obviously it will be the fundamental narrative feature of the game.
There was a time when magic flowed in this land right into its bones, when man knew nature, and not machines. The old ways were respected, and witches were revered. A better world? Perhaps, but time marches on, and if we do not move with it, we will lose the age of witchcraft forever.
I feel the approach of someone who may prove ready for these challenges. That can embrace our past and unlock our future. Who has known difficulties and pain. She has traveled far, and the path ahead will prove how much greater it is than she ever thought.
Our fall or our salvation? Only time will tell.
This is a title third person in single playerwhere our protagonist is called REKAa girl who, as you may have understood, is traveling towards something or someone, which is not at first clear even to herself. The first minutes of the game will be nothing less than a very short one tutorialsin which the movement and how to interact with the NPCs will be explained to us.
In this small juncture we will arrive in a rural village, where farmers and breeders live, and who will tell us what kind of place we find ourselves in. In addition to asking us for a couple of favors, making us familiar with the secondary missions and the compass, we will also discover that an old lady lives a short distance from the village, who she is said to be a witch.
We will go to meet her, and she will immediately tell us that she was waiting for us, as if our coming were written in destiny… and indeed it seems like this: the old witch is nothing less than Baba Yagaand as REKA we will become his apprentices.
Witchcraft and a walking house
Inside the game we will practice and learn witchcraftwhile we will be immersed in the setting we talked about: this is characterized by autumn landscapes, trees, waterways, animals, creatures of strange origins, and colors with red, brown and yellow tones. Obviously all in the company of our homewhose lower half is the giant body of a chickenwith lots of legs for walking.
Among the main features of the game, in addition to obtaining the various objectives that will make us progress in the story, there are some dedicated to crafting and construction.
In fact, Reka will be able to customize the cottage to your likingbuilding it plank by plank, and decorating it with objects found during exploration or as rewards for missions. This means that our exploration will also be made of search for materials and ingredients, which will also be fundamental for the Kitchenone of the fundamental tasks for a witch!

The implementation of these features therefore reduces the components of the survival genre to the more creative ones, significantly cutting those dedicated to survival in the strict sense. Among other interesting features in REKA is theimmediacy and the simplicity with which to access information that are needed. In fact, everything will be summarized and written in a diary, which will include both the missions (in progress and completed), and the ingredients and materials available, and other things that will always be useful to have on hand.
Finally, let’s not forget the possibility to choose: we have named the quests and the NPCs, but in some cases, in addition to simple dialogues, we will have the possibility to give answers of our choicewhich could change the outcome of what is happening, or perhaps what a character will think of us. Do we want to reveal the truth about something we discovered? Or lie for good? A click to the right or left will make the difference.
We close by saying that the graphic aspect of REKA is really pleasantand that although we are not faced with a game that aims to aim for photorealism, the atmosphere, the colors, and the style of the drawings make us feel immersed in a sort of fairy tale, which is extremely fitting given the theme covered.
