Mexico.- The Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) foresees that Around 200,000 vehicles will be discontinued annually in the Mexican Republic, this as a consequence of the decree through which the regularization of the so-called “chocolate cars”.
A few weeks ago, the federal government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the decree through which the legalization of cars illegally introduced into national territory from North America is allowed.,
Initially, the decree only covered 10 states (Baja California, Nuevo León, Nayarit, Sonora, Baja California Sur, Michoacán, Coahuila, Durango and Chihuahua), however, it was updated, including the entities of Sinaloa and Zacatecasso there are a total of 12 states where the regularization of this type of car is allowed.

During his participation in a virtual press conference organized by automotive businessmen, the president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors, Guillermo Rosales, emphasized that, in addition to causing losses in the sector, the legalization of chocolate cars also will affect the treasury, since on average each sale of a new vehicle leaves around 40 thousand pesos in taxes.
According to the decree published in the DOF, the reason why it was decided to include Sinaloa and Zacatecas in the regularization of this type of automotive units is the large migrant population that exists in these, which means that, in turn, there are , a large number of chocolate cars.
It should be remembered that not all cars illegally introduced into Mexico can be regularized, since they must have certain characteristics in order to access the benefit implemented during the current federal administration.
Chocolate cars that, among other things, correspond to luxury or sports models, as well as those that are armored. In addition, the government prohibits the legalization of vehicles that have been reported stolen or are subject to investigations by the Federal Public Ministry.
