A regional train hit the side of a parked locomotive of a freight train, a spokesman for the federal police said. According to current findings, the freight train was parked on a siding and was apparently protruding into the area of the moving train.
The route between Duisburg and Xanten had to remain closed for several hours to allow the accident to be recorded. According to reports, the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. near a railway crossing in Moers.
Three passengers on the train heading towards Xanten were so seriously injured that they were taken to hospital. Their lives are not in danger. Another 11 of the 29 people on board the passenger train sustained minor injuries. A rescue helicopter that was called out as a precaution was not needed. All passengers were escorted off the train, which was no longer operational.
The investigation into the accident
A police helicopter is also being used to reconstruct the accident using aerial footage. It is not yet known how fast the train was traveling at the time of the accident, said the police spokesman.
The passenger train’s tachograph will also be evaluated. As is usual with railway accidents, the Federal Railway Authority will be called in to investigate the incident. dpa
