The Salvadoran Football Federation announced that the referee José Arnoldo Amaya passed away last Monday, June 13, in an intensive care unit.after fans and players harassed and beat him for a decision he made during an amateur game.
Amaya sent off a player after receiving a double yellow, which led to a heated discussion. The situation escalated and from insults to fists, both players and fans who had gone to the Toluca stadium to support their teams participated in beating the man.
Amaya died hours later in the hospital due to internal bleeding in various parts of the body. Salvadoran authorities arrested the person primarily responsible for the referee’s murder, a member of the Mao Mao gang named Juan Manuel Cruz Lorezama.
“This criminal belongs to these gang circles, terrorist groups that enact death”, declared the Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro. In addition, he pointed out that the suspect has a profile as a trigger within the gang.

El Salvador has toughened sentences against people involved with gangs, and During the government headed by Nayib Bukele, the largest number of gang members have been arrested in the recent history of the Central American country.
“The Mao Mao gang is a reflection of what these terrorist groups did to our Salvadoran people,” said Minister Villatoro.

Juan Manuel Cruz Lorenzana, was captured for the murder of referee José Arnoldo Amaya in the Miramonte neighborhood, San Salvador.
Cruz, hit the victim and injured him to death, the incident occurred last Sunday on the Toluca court.

For its part, the Salvadoran Football Federation (Fesfut) condemned the events that led to the death of the referee.

Fesfut “condemns, regrets and rejects the physical aggression with a fatal result in humanity against referee José Arnoldo Amaya, by pseudo-fans and players during a match he was directing,” it stated in a statement.
