The regulation regarding the 2026 power units has finally been ratified by the FIA and now we only await the official – which seems imminent – of the agreement between Red Bull and Porsche starting precisely from 2026. The Stuttgart company has already filed the F1nally registered trademark and therefore all the pieces of the puzzle are gradually taking their place.
In light of Red Bull’s moves on the motorist market starting from 2021 and the 2026 regulation regarding the status of ‘new motorist’, it is also conceivable what the structure of the collaboration between Red Bull and Porsche will actually be in terms of actual implementation and assembly of the power unit. Why from 2021 the team managed by Christian Horner started a very aggressive purchasing campaign on the market of engine engineers – mostly from Mercedes – and built a division dedicated to engines in Milton Keynes (the Powertrains Limited)? Why that pool of technicians in that facility they will make half of the 2026 power unitthat is the ICE heat engine.
To report it is the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport which emphasizes that Porsche will take care of all the electrical component of the new power unit. A union at the level of strengths and technical skills that on the one hand will benefit from a pool of technicians who contributed to the creation of the Mercedes power unit, a reference point of the F1 starting grid from 2014 to 2021, and that on the other sees the Porsche instead already engaged for years in Formula E and now ready to debut in the WEC with the new Hypercar in 2023.
Red Bull and Porsche must hurry to announce the partnership to take advantage of the status of partially new manufacturers in view of 2026. In 2023 and 2024, 10 million dollars a year are at stake, which will become 5 in 2025. The FIA does not. will grant in full since both realities will certainly not be able to prove that they are ‘virgin’ both as regards the ICE and as regards the ERS, but certainly the possibility of obtaining a small economic bonus is there, even if only for smooth out the legal fees triggered by the acquisition campaign of Red Bull in Mercedes. Christian Horner spoke of a million pounds.
