The 2021 Drivers’ World Championship will be decided at the last round of the season, scheduled for December 10-12, in Abu Dhabi. On the renewed Yas Marina track, Lewis Hamilton e Max Verstappen they will present themselves for a real grand finale, with the two drivers facing each other on equal points for the conquest of the world title. While waiting for this final duel, however, the last Saudi Arabian GP reserved another, sensational chapter in the battle between the standard-bearers of Mercedes and Red Bull, with the Dutchman serving well two penalties, on and off the track.
The first, equal to 5 seconds to be subtracted from the final time of the test, was imposed by the Stewards for the aggressive defense on overtaking the rival and reigning champion, with the two challengers who ended up in the escape of the first corner. Having returned to the track still in the lead, and having obtained an advantage from the maneuver performed, the commissioners have thus decided to punish Mad Max. A ruling came five laps after the most discussed and controversial episode of the race: Verstappen, in an attempt to give the leadership to Hamilton close to the last corner, slowed down conspicuously in the trajectory, coming buffered from English. The latter, who then managed to continue the race incredibly without suffering serious damage to the car, finished in first place right in front of number 33, reaching him at the head of the world championship. For this second move, the Stewards again ruled against the Dutchman at the end of the event, penalizing him by another 10 seconds and removing them 2 points from the Super license.
Despite this, thanks to the detachment from the third classified Valtteri Bottas, even with the total 15 seconds of penalty Verstappen was still reassured the second place in the standings. In a race characterized by questionable choices and approaches by the Race Direction, especially close to the second start with the ‘negotiation’ with Red Bull, the same Austrian manufacturer will not proceed with any appeal for the penalties imposed on its top driver. As reported by De Telegraafin fact, the Milton Keynes team will not appeal for both penalties, thus focusing on the last race in Abu Dhabi.
