Red Bull, a lightning-fast path to success
“Drinks“: this was how it was contemptuously called Red Bull making its debut in Formula 1 in 2005. Instead, despite having only 20 seasons in the Circus, the Milton Keynes team has established itself as one of the most successful in history. With many regards to the prosopopoeia of others.
A lot has changed in two decades, but not everything. For example, team principal Chris Horner and councilor Helmut Marko they always remained in their place. The Austrian himself explained the first days of the adventure in Formula 1 and those raised eyebrows of his opponents which then turned into glances aimed at stealing the secrets of the Red Bull world.
Marko’s words
“We wanted to do things differently. We wanted to be competitive but have fun. As at first we had the image of a team of revelers. Which, to a certain extent, was correct. But the opponents forgot that we also wanted to win“, these are the words of the Austrian on the podcast Inside Line F1.
“When we had to recover the old Jaguar, it was a bit like a post office. There were no emotions, there was no passion. And to compete or win, you need passion. To change this situation and convince people that we were serious we had to invest a lot, and there was Adrian’s help (Newey, ed.) who told us what we needed. Luckily Dietrich Mateschitz (Red Bull founder dead in 2022, ed.) he spent the necessary money. It was a rather large sum: the infrastructure was not up to par, such as production, the simulator and the wind tunnel. But he convinced the people at Jaguar to change their approach, to put passion into it. Horner did a great job turning a half-baked team into a winning team. But he had all the support of Red Bull and the visionary of Mateschitz“.
