Max Verstappen has an 80-point lead over Charles Leclerc in the Drivers ‘standings, Red Bull has a 97-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings. Yet in Milton Keynes there is no intention of taking the foot off the accelerator of developments to also counter the potential loss of performance dictated by the FIA anti-porpoising directive that will come into force starting from the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.
Right in the Ardennes forest, Red Bull hopes to find two or three tenths of a performance from the introduction of a radical update. According to what was reported by the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport, in fact, a new lighter frame was set up in Milton Keynes to combat the main flaw of the RB18, namely the fact of being overweight compared to the minimum weight established by the Federation (according to the estimates found in Hungary there are seven kilos of Red Bulls too much).
The process behind the validation of a new chassis is not a walk in the park because the new shock has to pass the FIA crash tests. Mercedes, in turn well above the weight limit, did not consider the idea of homologating a new chassis because at least three examples must be built for a cost of 2 million dollars.
Red Bull is not the only one to have a new chassis in store for the second half of the season, in fact another team would be ready to do the same. The repeated complaints by Christian Horner regarding the difficulty of meeting the budget cap in 2022 due to inflation and the Federation has therefore provided an extra 4 million to fulfill the requests of the top teams. Red Bull has invested around half of this amount in a new chassis.
