Broken and the recycling of worn-out clothing and home textiles has been facilitated in the metropolitan area, as rags can now be taken for recycling free of charge.

Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) and its partners have expanded the collection network for waste textiles and opened new collection points across Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa.

There are free collection points in nine shopping centers and one self-service flea market.

In the past, scrap textiles have been able to be left at Sortti stations for a fee, which have been collecting rags since 2019.

At issue is a collection experiment that began at the beginning of the year and will continue until the end of June. The aim of the experiment is to find out what effect the location of the collection point has on the number of recyclable rags.

Approximately 120,000 kilos of disposal textiles accumulate at Sortti stations every year. With the help of the collection pilot, the amount is to be tripled.

All disposable textiles that end up in collection are sorted, processed and utilized as raw material for new textiles. They can be used, for example, to make clothes, yarn, filter fabrics, insulation material or acoustic panels.

Further processing will take place in Paimio, where the largest waste textile processing plant in Northern Europe was opened last autumn. The plant is capable of handling up to five million pounds of textiles per year.

Removal textiles are several unusable clothing and home textiles. However, recyclable textiles must be clean and dry. Small stains do not hurt.

For example, jackets, pants, shirts, sheets, towels, and tablecloths can be left at collection points in a tightly closed plastic bag.

Underwear, socks, pillows, blankets and carpets, for example, are not suitable for collection. Belts, bags and shoes that are in poor condition are also mixed waste, HSY guides.
