The Minister of Interior of Spain in Italy contacted in April 2024 with the National Police to inform about the intervention and the Spanish agents found that the paintings had been stolen during an art exhibition in 2021 at the Miguel Ángel Hotel in Madrid.
The works belonged to the Lorenart Gallery, which exhibited in the hotel more than 200 works between paintings and sculptures of renowned contemporary artists such as Sorolla, Chillida, Dalí, Antoni Clavé, Óscar Domínguez, Juan de Echevarría, Darío de Regoyos, Luis Feito, Menchu Gal, José Guerrero, Francisco Iturrino, Manolo Millares, Benjamín Palencia, Jaume Plensa or Aurelio Arteta.
The security cameras captured the image of a possible suspect, a man who would have left the hotel with an opaque bag. In addition to the two works now recovered, the thief was done with one more painting and a sculpture. The gallery valued the booty at 340,000 euros.
Javier Martín Recoverada’s sculpture had been stolen in April of the following year in an art gallery in Barcelona.
The information collected by the Police was sent through the official channels to Interpol Roma to initiate the necessary procedures to return the pieces to their legitimate owners.
