309.3 km / h on a straight. This is the extraordinary record achieved by the car Dallara AV-21driven by the artificial intelligence system designed by Polimove team, of the Politecnico di Milano. The record was set on the Space Shuttle landing strip at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.
No self-driving car had ever succeeded in the enterprise of exceeding 300 kilometers per hour, a goal widely surpassed by the team of researchers. The record was established by calculating the average speed over one kilometer in two different attempts traveled in opposite directions, to eliminate the influence of the wind.
The previous speed record was set at 282.4 kilometers per hour, set by Roborace.
The Polytechnic team was the only one to get the chance to test at the Kennedy Space Center, thanks to the victory obtained at the Indy Autonomous Challenge, an automobile championship in which 39 teams from different universities around the world, who design self-driving systems, compete against each other. All teams have a Dallara Av-21 car at their disposal, to which they can only implement their own self-guidance system, without making mechanical changes.
The competition is all in the development of artificial intelligence algorithms capable of making the most of autonomous driving.
During the competition the car of the Milanese team had reached a speed of 278.4 kilometers per hour during the race.
Polimove: what does it do?
Polimove is a team that is part of the research group of the Move Polytechnic, led by Professor Sergio Savaresi, who for twenty years has been dealing with automatic controls and autonomous driving for means of transport of all types: electric bicycles, cars and tractors.
The car is fitted with three Luminar, Hydra and LiDAR sensors which, using radar technology and, thanks to laser signals, rather than radio waves, are able to detect accurate data on the surrounding environment, thus returning three-dimensional, long-distance and 360-degree information. to the artificial intelligence that drives the car.
Now the team’s goal is to set the speed record on the Atlanta circuit and not on the straight.
