Zack Snyder surprised last year with Rebel Moon, a science fiction film on Netflix. The renowned director of Justice League and Watchmen had a large cast filled with big names like Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsoun, Bae Doona and Anthony Hopkins as narrator.
The plot follows Kora (Boutella), a young farmer with a mysterious past who begins to build a resistance on the planet Veldt. The enemy of this group of rebels is Motherworlda vast space empire that conquered various lands around the galaxy for centuries.
This year, the sequel Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Warrior Who Leaves Marks arrived on the streaming platform to continue the story of Kora and her companions. The Republic sat down to talk with the actors Ed Skrein and Fra Fee, who play the film's villains: the ruthless Admiral Atticus Noble and the enigmatic military leader Balisarius.
“I've been wondering if I've ever played a genocide, but I don't think I have. (With Fra) we have talked about the duality and the fun of playing a character like that. It is quite intense and difficult to live in that space fifteen hours a day,” Skrein explained.
“It's in your psyche (to create characters like this). When you take your work seriouslyyou're thinking about it a lot of the time.”
For his part, Fra Fee was excited about his role in these two Snyder films. Although Balisarius usually appears in scenes from the past, he is undoubtedly one of the most important characters in the fictional universe, so it would not be surprising to see him in future Rebel Moon films.
“When I got to the set, I noticed that all the actors were using English accents like Ed. I asked Snyder if I should do that, and he said 'absolutely not.' Balisarius is not from the Motherworld originally, although that information is not given to the audience in these first two parts. He has fought to reach that incredible level. He lived in another place, on another planet. “He rose to become the most powerful person in the universe,” he said.
“I was happy to use my own (Northern Irish) accent., because I haven't used it as much on the big screen. When I went to the audition, they asked me to read the script in my own accent, so that's what I did.”
Rebel Moon – part 2: the warrior who leaves marks will premiere on Netflix this Friday, April 19. The platform also plans to release an extended version of the film in the future.
