Reader’s opinion|At-risk consumers of alcohol are more likely to use the home delivery service of alcoholic beverages.
Government proposes that next year alcohol should be ordered directly to your home, for example from your local store. In the Institute of Health and Welfare’s (THL) drinking habits study, one in three said that someone close to them had problems with alcohol in the past year. From the point of view of loved ones, facilitating the availability of alcohol is unequivocally a bad thing.
When studying home delivery around the world, it has been noticed that it is more likely to be used by high-risk consumers of alcohol. Drinking too much often has unpleasant consequences for those around you as well: arguments, insecurity, and at worst violent situations. For a child, the harm caused by a parent’s drinking can be lifelong.
Alcohol burdens social and health services struggling with a lack of resources. Politics should prevent harm caused by alcohol, not increase it. Children in particular should be protected by legislation.
The profits of the trade sector and the benefit of the moment for occasional consumers from the reform do not compensate for the costs of the consequences. The human suffering of families has no price tag.
