Reader’s opinion|The economic importance of tourism is still not recognized or acknowledged.
About travel a new Nokia has been hoped for. The opportunity is missed repeatedly, and the decision-makers do not make the job any easier. The economic importance of the industry is still not recognized or at least acknowledged. Even in the best years, the combined budget of Visit Finland, regional tourism organizations and project and other operators is small compared to the investments of the major tourism powers.
Because of Visit Finland’s budget cuts, we have to invest in working together. We can’t do it with money, so let’s be single-minded and innovative. Pushed by the cuts, the economy must rise above regional sub-optimization and project competition. Now we have to concretely join forces.
The success of our locomotives – Helsinki and Lapland – is a prerequisite for the success of the entire country. Now, if ever, there is work for the tourism cooperation forum. The next government can do its part and make history at the same time by appointing Finland’s first minister of tourism. The potential of tourism is redeemed with the cooperation of all actors.
