Reader ‘s opinion The entire food system is involved in climate work

Cultivation, animal husbandry, logistics have been developed, productivity has been improved and investment has been made in renewable energy sources.

Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo (Green) criticized domestic agriculture, arguing that agriculture has been “sidelined” in climate action (Yle’s A-studio 9.8.). There is no need for such a straightforward interpretation.

Agriculture is part of the food system, which is a huge entity. Primary production, the food industry, trade and nutrition services employ a total of about 340,000 people. With their expertise, they guarantee us clean and traceable food from fields and greenhouses to the table. When the importance of food to the health and well-being of the nation and to the national economy is included, a very complex whole is discussed.

According to research, Finns value domestic food and also buy it more and more. This has become clear especially during the Korona period. But on climate issues, agricultural production and its emissions continue to be blamed.

Indeed, according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, it is time to curb emissions and sequester carbon from the air. This is possible in Finland.

In recent decades, efficiency has been sought and also achieved in various areas of food production. Cultivation, animal husbandry, logistics have been developed, productivity has been improved and investment has been made in renewable energy sources.

The food industry has streamlined its production to save water and energy, thus helping to reduce emissions. Trade is also constantly looking for new ways to reduce emissions. Efforts are being made everywhere to reduce and reduce food waste. In addition, circular economy expertise has been utilized, bringing tremendous newness to the entire food system and helping to improve overall sustainability.

Now it would be time for all of us to take a spoon into a beautiful hand and stop blaming each other at some point. Food is common to all. We need more encouragement and working together for the industry! Through joy and positivity, we can move forward in the best cooperation. We have no other choice.
