My children attends Helsinki primary school. Throughout the fall, we parents, through Wilma, have received several exhortations to support our children in memorizing learning at home. To my shock, the textbook of mathematics also encourages this primitive method of teaching.
Learning by heart does not develop logical reasoning, creativity, or mathematical thinking. At its worst, it leads to the formation of attitudes that are detrimental to postgraduate studies. I would rather memorize learning that will gradually go down in history in Finnish schools.
