Net fishing as soon as the restrictions were lifted, the death of the Saimaa ringed seal caught in the nets was immediately apparent (HS 5.7.).
The link between net fishing and seal deaths is known. But surprisingly little attention has been paid in the debate to the fact that net fishing is a very poor form of fishing in warm water anyway. Even when the water temperature in the surface layer in Saimaa is now well over 20 degrees, the prey fish die quickly in the net and become unusable.
Is net fishing carried out regardless of whether the water produces edible fish or dead water that is dead, highly polluted and unfit for human consumption in warm water? The July online fishery in Saimaa should not be a matter of principle.
