Reader ‘s opinion Edwin Linkomies and Kustaa Vilkuna were good friends

Evidence of this is their long-standing cooperation in science policy.

My eyes happened to Vesa Karonen in Helsingin Sanomat (September 25) published book review of Keijo K. Kulha’s book Military Propaganda Force. Karonen wrote: “Prime Minister Edwin Linkomies did not like Vilkuna, but was replaced by Lauri Posti, a prominent linguist and an uncompromisingly dry official. Linkomies was satisfied, but as a coincidence, Posti was also one of Kekkonen’s friends. ”

Contrary to the review, Edwin Linkomies and Kustaa Vilkuna were good friends. Evidence of this is their long-standing cooperation in science policy after Linkomies was released from prison.

Linkomies also did not dismiss Vilkuna from the position of head of censorship, but promoted him to the head of the State Information Service. Linkomies dismissed him from this position at the request of C. G. Mannerheim. Linkomies would not have wanted to do this at all, but in the end Mannerheim himself announced that he would not resign unless Vilkuna was separated. Linkomies even ordered, after Vilkuna’s dismissal, to perform the position as deputy manager under the Labor Obligations Act.

More information can be found in my dissertation From the stone foot to the brush log: Gustav Vilkuna’s social thinking and action (Keuruu 1993) and the sources mentioned therein.
