Reader opinion The nurse’s paycheck is indeed deep

I am followed with interest the discussion in Helsingin Sanomat around the new collective agreement in the municipal sector.

Tehari’s chairman Millariikka Rytkönen revealed . Markku Jalonen, President and CEO of the RK, representing employers in the municipal sector tried to soften (HS 30.1.) By noting that the average salary of nurses is approximately EUR 3 370 per month. He emphasized that it was more than what the majority of Finns deserve. Jalonen also said that he considered the demand of one contract industry for a larger salary increase to be unrealistic.

However, it is important for Jalonen and everyone else to note that this average salary includes all shift work allowances. To earn it, the nurse has to be at work, away from the family, an endless number of evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. A much more realistic picture of the care pay gap is given by the base salary instead of the average salary. According to Statistics Finland’s report, the basic salary of a nurse in 2020 was EUR 2,567 per month. Monttu is really deep.
