Reader opinion NATO membership would not increase Finland’s security

I am in favor of Finland’s neutrality and remaining outside the contradictions of the great powers

Yet in 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Finland’s NATO membership is Finland’s own business.

Now the situation has changed. On December 1, 2021, Putin introduced Russia’s new military doctrine, according to which he demanded concrete agreements from the military alliance NATO that it did not intend to expand eastward, which means, for example, that Putin does not want NATO to Finland or Ukraine at all.

President Sauli Niinistö comments on Putin’s NATO speeches: “Deciding on membership is a matter between the candidate country and NATO member states.” According to Niinistö, the basis of Finland’s foreign, security and defense policy is to maintain national room for maneuver and choice, which also includes the opportunity to form an alliance militarily and apply for NATO membership.

According to Niinistö, Finland considers NATO to be a factor that increases security and stability in Europe.

According to a survey by MTV and the Finnish Association of Officers, two out of three officers are in favor of NATO membership, but public support has remained low, ie only about one in five Finns is in favor of NATO membership.

I am not in favor of Finland’s NATO membership, because it would not increase security for Finland, but rather tensions between Finland and Russia. That is why I am in line with Kekkonen, ie I am in favor of Finland’s neutrality and remaining outside the conflicts of the great powers.
