Reader opinion Fossil fuels are fueling climate change and the Putin War

We need to end our dependence on fossil fuels that support despots like Putin.

New war was the last thing we missed as countless vicious global problems awaited resolution.

A recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) overshadowed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, they both have the same message: We need to end our dependence on fossil fuels that support despots like Putin and make our planet uninhabitable.

Consumers and businesses must decide whether they are on the side of the enemies of our planet and its inhabitants in the fossil fuel trade, or whether they are part of a sustainable revolution. Companies still operating in Russia or trading with Russia are fueling Putin’s war, causing irreparable damage to their own reputation. However, since the conquest of Crimea, companies have had eight years to plan their departure. The reputation of the hunters is shattering at the same rate as the windows of hospitals and residential buildings bombed by Russia.

With regard to climate change, we have had 66 years since Gilbert Plass’s first warning to find solutions. Again, Putin’s war could be a turning point. If consumers realize their power and businesses learn that morality matters, we still have hope to solve all the vicious problems we face. However, this will require severe punishment from consumers and the international community on all companies that are still continuing their business with Putin after Russia after all the war crimes we have seen.
