Reader opinion An employee approaching retirement age can choose their role in the workplace

The employer or the work community alone cannot be blamed for a poor work culture.

Marketta Rantama (HS Opinion 19.12.) piti the marginalization of many retiring workers, highlighting the busy attitude of the employer and the work community towards them. The view is often correct, but Rantama did not take into account the role of the retiring employee in the situation. If an experienced employee maintains his or her skills by actively distributing them to younger people and has a constructive attitude towards his or her employer and work community, the matter will be noticed and welcomed in the workplace.

One could ask another way: Do age and proximity to retirement age justify passivity in the workplace? Would he have lost his motivation to take responsibility for the situation and leave the workplace? The structure of the work culture mentioned by Rantama also essentially includes the role chosen by the older employee, which is negative at worst and positive at best. The employer or the work community alone cannot be blamed for a poor work culture.
