The president did not participate in the city’s civic procession and went straight to a motorcycle with supporters. He stated that Brazil will soon have “one of the cheapest fuels in the world” and again criticized governors of the Northeast for their resistance to the reduction of ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services).

Bolsonaro met with his supporters 8 km from the procession site and 6 km from Fonte Nova, where Lula has an event scheduled with his voters.
Lula: “it is not a military parade”
The former president took the civic walk alongside the governor of Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), the vice-presidential candidate, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and his wife, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja.
He contrasted the procession with the traditional parades of the armed forces on September 7, after Brazil’s independence. “It’s not a military parade, it’s a people’s parade. That is what independence means.”said the PT.
After the walk, Lula went to an event at the Fonte Nova Arena with his supporters. The PT spoke for about half an hour. At her husband’s request, Janja stayed by her side most of the time, handing her the pages of the speech.
Lula compared the Bolsonaro government’s package of goodies to ice cream: “suck it, it’s over”. The PT urged voters to accept the benefits but not vote for Bolsonaro in October.
The former president also said it was necessary “defend Petrobras, Eletrobras and Correios” and condemned mining on indigenous lands – a measure defended by the current president.

INDEPENDENCE OF BAHIA
The holiday celebrated in Bahia marks events that took place at dawn on July 2, 1823, when the city of Salvador dawned almost deserted, as the Portuguese army had definitively left the then province of Bahia. It was the official end of the 17-month war (from February 1822 to July 1823) between troops from Portugal and Brazil. This Brazilian victory consolidated the political separation of Brazil from Portugal.
