Lewis Hamilton has regained the lead in the world championship with a third place in the chaotic Hungarian GP. At least for now. Vettel is in danger of being disqualified for running out of fuel in his car. The team has now protested against this. So for now just P3 for Hamilton, but if Vettel really loses his P2, everything will move on. Because Bottas went bowling in the first corner, Verstappen had to drive the rest of the race with a damaged car. A single point through tenth place at the end of the race was the result.
The big winner of the tumultuous race was Esteban Ocon. He took a Formula 1 victory for the first time. Vettel was constantly on his heels but eventually finished behind the Frenchman. These are the reactions to the 2021 Hungarian GP from the drivers themselves, who were not yet aware at the time of the interviews that Vettel’s result would be cancelled.
‘This is not what I wanted. Valtteri completely misses his braking point and causes a big crash. After that, the whole right side of my car was gone. The car was extremely difficult to drive. Still, I gave everything and we managed to save at least one point. That’s better than nothing. The last two races have not gone well, through no fault of our own. We need to stay focused, forget this and just look ahead. But that’s life. These things unfortunately happen and it’s not what you want.’
“First of all, I want to congratulate Ocon. It’s a great result for the team and Fernando gave me quite a beating. It was fantastic to race like that, although it was often on the edge. Today was a difficult day for us. I had to work hard to fight back from last place on this track. Maybe I could fight for the lead if we had a few laps left. But I’m actually happy that the race was over and that Ocon won, because he needs this in his career. This race shows its potential to the world.”
“We weren’t expecting the win at all today. It’s one of my favorite tracks and to win here is extra special. I also think back to the difficult races we’ve had lately. The team stood by me through that difficult streak and now I am a Grand Prix winner. It is also the first victory for Renault/Alpine in this era, so go on les blues.’
‘It’s a mixed feeling. It is of course a good result and I have tried everything. Still, I’m a little disappointed because we were so close to a win and I wanted it so badly. In the beginning I took it easy, but then I started to put a little more pressure so that he would make a mistake, but it didn’t happen. I’m happy for Ocon and he deserves it in the end.’
“I had a bad start with a lot of wheelspin and lost a lot of places. When I wanted to brake for the first corner I was right behind Norris, so I locked my wheels because I was so close. Then I hit him and then it was a mess. We were in a good position for the race and I was disappointed.’
‘It is unbelievable. I was already in third place and I braked later than the McLaren. I felt I was way ahead of him, but unfortunately Bottas made a big mistake and ruined our race. It ran full in my radiator, so the engine is damaged. It was just a bad crash.’
