‘I am deeply ashamed that Europe and America do not dare to take a stand against a man who fits in the line of Lenin, Stalin and Hitler’ and ‘Stop hating the Russians who reside in our country’: these are some reactions to news topics that occupy readers . Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Monday 7 March. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
Russian invasion of Ukraine | Can we accommodate that many people?
‘Safe on Dutch soil’ (AD 5-3). It is terrible to have to flee because there is war. And of course help is provided. I read that Rotterdam can receive about 2000 Ukrainian refugees. But our country is 15 times smaller than Ukraine, where 44 million people live. Our country has almost 18 million inhabitants. Housing shortage, homeless people, crime, we are on top of each other with all the associated problems. Are these people vaccinated? Isn’t it utopia that you can accommodate so many people?
Pauline Borst, Rotterdam.
Russian invasion of Ukraine II | Putin actually got a license
Isn’t it terrible how the Russians are raging in Ukraine? NATO made a big mistake, they should have told the Russians: ‘If you invade the country, we will give Ukraine air support.’ If that had been clear in advance, Putin would not have dared invade in my eyes. But what does President Biden say: We are certainly not going to help. In fact, he has given Putin a license. After this mistake, it would still be wise for NATO, despite not being a member, to help Ukraine so that they are not slaughtered. I am deeply ashamed that Europe and America do not dare to take action against a man who fits in the line of Lenin, Stalin and Hitler.
Hans van Rooijen, Cothen.
Russian invasion of Ukraine III | Rather be out in the cold than in a nuclear cloud
Will we keep filling the Russian treasury by taking gas and oil? Continuing to pump the ground from under their feet and literally undermine them is not an option either. And because of the recent attack on a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, we are now confronted with the facts of how vulnerable that makes a country. Not to mention the fact that we also remain dependent on the supply of raw materials from abroad for a nuclear power plant, plus the nuclear waste problem that should not be underestimated. We have clean energy for the taking without waste problems, such as wind, solar and hydropower. It just needs to be exploited. As for myself, I’d rather be out in the cold than in a nuclear cloud.
Y. Braam, Voorburg.
Russian invasion of Ukraine IV | Stop hating Russians in our own country
I read that the Dutch are now rebelling against the Russians who are staying in our country. Let’s stop that. These people cannot help their country’s leadership behave the way it does. Let us show that we as people, regardless of origin and faith, can live in peace, freedom and love, side by side and with each other. Together we can meet this challenge and show that respect for each other is the only way to happiness for everyone.
Marcel de Beer, Houten
Russian invasion of Ukraine V | Cancel? Ukrainians have nothing to do with that
Festival in Haarlem with Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky cancelled. What’s next? Russian art from the museums, books by Russian writers from the libraries? Do we cancel the final exam in Russian? So let’s get the vodka off the shelves too. In any case, this is of no use to the Ukrainians.
Ilona Dekker, Nieuwegein.
Youth news and Ukraine | Is there any help for little ones who can’t contain it?
“Can we spare the little ones this tragedy?” (Letters 4-3). No Loekie van Kerkhoven, I don’t see the need either. I’ve long wondered why 6-year-olds should follow the news. In my opinion, they are presented with the concerns of adults far too young. Do they all have a suitable safety net if they can’t handle it? Is there help for those who can’t keep up? New. There is an acute shortage of attention for young children. Confronting them with this is a useless risk.
Francinia Steenstra, The Hague.
Youth news and Ukraine II | The Youth News is only intended from group 6
As a teacher of group 3, I can say to the (in my eyes rightly) concerned grandmother that it is not the intention to watch the Youth News with this group of children. The youth news is intended from group 6. This can even be found on the Youth News website. I would definitely bring this up with the teacher.
Linsey Sterkenburg, Zeist.
Column Egbert Jan Riethof | Uncomfortable, eating out
‘Solo, there’s a penalty for that’ (Column 5-3). Oh, how recognizable, EJ’s column. Reserving a table for one person in a restaurant and then sitting opposite an unused place setting is one such thing. Recently I asked if they wanted to remove it. My holiday is not yet booked.
Jannie Schellingerhout, Capelle aan den IJssel.
