‘It seems that there is a double standard here’ and ‘What a masterpiece by Özcan about the World Cup in Qatar and our rotten morale’: these are some reactions to news topics that keep readers busy. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Friday 3 December. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
Parliamentary debate | Can’t explain, especially because it’s so healthy
‘Room is also tired of yo-yoing, but then what?’ (AD 2-12). Since last Monday, outdoor sports locations have to close after 5 p.m. That means no sport for many working, studying and school-going people. My retired, frail in-laws get to play golf every day with their equally frail retired friends. That’s fine, because outdoor sports contribute to their health. Many workers, young people and children are no longer allowed to play football, hockey and athletics or otherwise in the evenings. This makes them thicker, unhealthy and therefore more vulnerable. And all this for public health. It is impossible to explain.

Geothermal | Here is a bit of double standards
‘Drinking water at risk from geothermal energy’ (AD 2-12). Drilling kilometers deep for warm water can pollute drinking water. I had to think about the state of affairs regarding shale gas. A few years ago it was not even allowed to drill test drilling for the same reasons. Several municipalities proudly declared themselves ‘shale gas-free’. There was also a fear of earthquakes, something that the State Supervision of Mines for the extraction of geothermal energy has also warned about. It seems that there is a double standard here. Because the energy transition must continue. No matter what.

Cabinet formation | Everything different with the same team? That takes reflection
Our country has had a lame cabinet that does not govern the country for almost a year now. Are the current parties at the formation table prepared to serve the country? Or is it only party and self-interest that are decisive? It may well be impossible for a resigned (rejected) cabinet to return in the same combination. Everything has to be different. With the old squad? That takes a lot of looking in the mirror and jumping over the shadow. I think fresh young blood is needed at the formation table. Fresh forces with a ‘blank criminal record’ pull the stranded ship from state within a few weeks.

Departure Olav Mol | Nice farewell: interview with a world champion
‘Olav Mol disappears after thirty years as a regular commentator’ (AD 2-12). Viaplay will not work with Olav Mol. That is ashame. Mol and co have built up a great deal of respect with their program. There must have been underlying reasons for doing so. I’ve never heard of the new people. I wish Olav Mol a lot of strength and hope that he can interview a Dutch world champion this month. That would be a nice ending. Ziggo Sport has been a great success in recent years. I wish the new channel every success, but will not subscribe. I do watch the BBC or Belgium, which is nice too.

Column Özcan | Stay away for a long time, maybe something will change
“Amazing: everyone will soon be participating in the World Cup in Qatar” (Column 2-12). What a masterpiece by Özcan about the World Cup in Qatar and our rotten morale. Especially the ambassadors and everyone who earns from it. No than WTA, the world tennis association, which stands up for one tennis star and boycotts all tournaments. If only all those unions and bobo’s had balls and would ban those kinds of countries and not come up with a lame excuse like ‘sport can make it better’. Stop it. Just stay away for a few decades. Who knows, maybe something will change, because one thing is certain: by going there it certainly won’t happen.

Healthcare staff | Make it attractive, make it a calling again
Now that hospitals are filling up with corona patients, we have a staff shortage. One of the main causes is the outflow of healthcare personnel. Everyone in The Hague points to each other. But it would be useful to find out why the nurse quits his job. Salary is not the main cause, so money cannot directly solve this problem. One of the complaints is that people are no longer busy with caring but most of the time filling in forms. In combination with the current work pressure, this profession is no longer attractive. Do that and it becomes a calling again.
