‘The opposition is rightly concerned about healthcare’ and ‘Van Dissel told a story without having to put a political sauce over it’: these are some reactions to news topics that interest readers. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Tuesday 21 December. You can send in a response yourself via letters@ad.nl.
Column Linda Akkermans | Rather this struggle than a pre-cooked story
‘Poor Irma could hardly keep up with Van Dissel’ (Column 20-12). Despite the fact that Van Dissel used expensive words, which Irma had trouble following, he brought a story in which you can draw your own conclusions, without having to put a political sauce over it. This is where the struggle leading to action became apparent. If it were up to me, I’d rather have it like this than a pre-cooked story that doesn’t show what led to those decisions.

Column Linda Akkermans II | He almost did it fatherly
For the first time I disagree with Linda. Van Dissel did just fine, almost in a fatherly way. Added value.
Angela van Leusden, Leerdam.
Riots at the Kuip | Maybe players need to make themselves heard
‘Ugliness reigns in Classic’ (Sports World 20-12). In AD of Monday 20 December I read about the riots at De Kuip around the Feyenoord-Ajax match. How wonderful it would be if the players would declare en bloc in the media that they want nothing to do with these rioters. And so clearly distance yourself from these ‘supporters’. But maybe that’s too difficult for these players/sports heroes?
Jaap Barendregt, Rhoon.
New cabinet | Take another look at the care plans
‘The coming landing scene is going to look very different from all the others’ (AD 20-12). I am very happy that we are finally getting a new government. It shows courage to step over one’s own shadow and tackle the gigantic problems of our time with concrete solutions. In my opinion, the vision with regard to healthcare is less positive. The opposition is rightly concerned about this. In this coronat time it has become clear how much we need these super people. And if something has to be cut back, it is certainly not the concern. On the contrary: it is precisely this that deserves to be supported in every possible way, including financially. If our new cabinet wants to take a closer look at the subject of care, the total package of government plans certainly offers perspective.

Lockdown | Don’t just call supermarkets essential
“This is perhaps the heaviest moment of the corona crisis” (AD 20-12). From the last press conference you hear and read that the supermarket can remain open as an essential store. Even on the site of the national government, only the supermarket is mentioned as an example of an essential store in the food industry. Why are the bakers, butchers, poulterers, greengrocers and the like never mentioned in this context? Aren’t those also essential stores in this industry? The supermarkets really save themselves in these times. Apparently they have so much money left that they can bombard us with endless commercials on TV ad nauseam. In fact, it is precisely the already vulnerable retail stores that should be promoted in their own hometown.
Ronald Kroese, Voorschoten.
newspaper | Still something nice to read
‘Schools already have Christmas holidays, that will be home schooling again’ (John 20-12). John, Gerrit de Jager of Monday 20 December is unsurpassedly good. Toos and Henk also unparalleled the same day, still something nice in the newspaper.
Dick van Dijk, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.
