The 2024 Superbike season will officially kick off this weekend, with huge new features that had already been seen during the tests. One of the most interesting concerns the six-time world champion Jonathan Reaready to start a new adventure in Yamaha after a long and successful period at Kawasaki. However, the first weekend scheduled to Phillip Island could be tricky for Northern Irish.
The fall and the bruises
During the tests of Tuesdayalso held on the Australian track, the 37-year-old lost control of his YZF-R1 falling ruinously and causing some bruises. Fortunately, Rea did not suffer any fractures or serious injuries, but the 'bruises' could limit the performance of the new Yamaha rider on the track, as he himself admitted in an interview for the official Superbike channels.
“I'm more or less fine, not 100% – He admitted – Yesterday I woke up feeling sorry for myself. Today went better, we hope to take another step forward tomorrow. On Tuesday we desperately needed to get on the bike to confirm some functional elements, so I reduced the revs to a minimum. Tomorrow we begin in earnest. I have waited a long time for this moment.
It will be nice to get down to the pit lane for the first official session of 2024 and start working. We don't know what kind of weather we will face. There will be wind, the temperature will drop, we will have to plan ahead.”
Still work to do
Aside from physical conditions and the desire to get on track, does Rea feel in a position to fight for victory? “At this moment, no – he answered – my final pace, as well as the race pace, it's not fast, and we need to improve. Maybe tomorrow afternoon I can put myself in a position to fight for the leading positions. It would be a dream, but we also have to be realistic. Right now, winning a race is a dream. We have to work hard to achieve this goal.”.
